listing of some of the Money Saving Ideas. After you read all of these
tips on money savings you will be able to start thinking of more ways
to save money that are unique to you and your family. Use this listing as a
starting point. The main idea is to look at every way you spend your hard earned
money and find ways to spend less and save more. These are not in any particular
order and some are going to seem goofy. The idea is to get you and your family
to cut back on spending and do more saving. These budgeting ideas are
here to promote "spend less and save more" lifestyle that will bring you
financial health.
Buy
in Bulk.
It is true that warehouse shopping can save a lot of money. Even if you have a
small family, you can always split large quantities. The price of items in bulk
is generally a great bargain. If you are single, you might go in with friends or
family on bulk items.
Use Discounts. There are always lots of offers that give you a discount
if you spend a certain amount in store, especially on things like toiletries,
music and DVDs. You can also pick up buy one, get one free vouchers that you can
use to pick up more stuff without paying any extra for it.
Using Credit Cards. Use credit cards only
for emergency. Although convenient, credit cards are dangerous and damaging. In
addition, if you have a credit card that has a $1,000 balance and you pay only
the minimum payment each month, it will take you between 20 and 30 years to pay
off that $1,000 balance since the majority of money is going strictly toward the
interest and not the principal amount.
Shop Online. Many online
businesses offer great bargains and in some cases, free shipping. Since the
Internet is such a competitive market, you can usually find fantastic deals. In
addition, many of your favorite businesses where you shop in person have
websites that offer even greater savings. Bookstores such as Amazon.com will
sell books up to 70% off the original price. Overstock.com is another online
business that sells closeout items for fantastic bargains.
Utility
Saving.
Utilities are a part of life, but with a little effort, they can be kept under
control. Heat, electricity, water and telephones are all controllable expenses -
which means an opportunity to save money. You may set up some discipline in your
home such as turning lights off when leaving the room, having only a parent
adjust the air or heat, using low-wattage light bulbs or energy efficient
fluorescent lighting. Using less water also saves money on your utility bills.
If you have a personal phone or cellular, take advantage of the internet and
email instead of calling your friends and family.
Use Free Coupons
& Vouchers. Find and use coupons & vouchers for everything you
normally buy. Sunday papers and magazines are loaded with them. You can save
hundreds of dollars a year by using them. These are loaded with free offers,
free prizes, free gifts, free information, etc. Take a quick look at them to see
if there is anything you might be interested in. Going out and spending your
money just for the sake of using the voucher is also not a good idea, but if you
were planning on a shopping trip, make the most of any coupons or vouchers that
you can pick up.
Dust off your Debits. If you have got a bank account, take a look
at the Direct Debits coming out of it every month. You may be spending money on
a gym that you have not been to in three months. You might also be subscribing
to a magazine that you don't really read much. If you do find some, you can
cancel them by contacting your bank. Direct Debits can also save you money. Many
companies, such as mobile phone providers charge you extra if you don't pay by
direct debit because of the extra paperwork and administration costs. If you do
make regular payments, contact the relevant company to see if switching to
Direct Debit can get you a discount.
Distinguish between Wants and Needs. You will save
a lot of money if you don't mistake wants for needs. Needs are pretty simple to
identify those items that are necessary to sustain: shelter, food, clothing,
transportation, etc. Wants are those things that enhance or possibly improve our
family life. Have you ever heard "I absolutely need...?" when the actual meaning
was "I really want?" This is not to suggest that you should not be able to have
the things you want only that to delude yourself into believing that a want is a
need and busting your budget in the process, is a recipe for financial
disaster.
Gift Giving. If you ask people if they prefer a store bought or
handmade gift, the majority would choose the latter. Handmade gifts are
individualized and come from the heart. When you have a birthday, anniversary,
baby shower, wedding, or Christmas gift to give, make the gift. For Christmas,
you could make a beautiful ornament or door wreath, for a baby shower you could
purchase an inexpensive bib pattern and make special bibs, or for a wedding, you
could create a wonderful album of photos showing the couples dating life. Other
great options include making homemade hot chocolate, soaps, candles, or lotions
and placing them in inexpensive glass containers or baskets purchased at a
thrift shop. If you use a mason jar, add foam and fabric under the lid for added
color, use a label to write the contents and a message of endearment, and wrap a
nice piece of ribbon around the ridge. The options are endless, so get
creative.
Budgeting and Budget Planning. Budgeting allows you
to track your monthly expenditures so that you can plan key savings strategies
for important short and long term goals. Everyone should create a budget. If you
are not sure how or just not good with money, many businesses offer free
financial consulting to help you put a budget together. Knowing where you are
spending your money is by far the best way to save. In most cases, people have
no idea where their money is really going and once they see it on paper, not
only are they surprised but eager to change their spending
habits.
Comparison Shopping. It used to be that comparison shopping was a
long and drawn out process. Driving from one store to another or making numerous
phone calls could be a real time waster. Even if you were able to make an
adequate comparison, sometimes it was not worth the hours you needed to invest
to get the comparison. The Internet has changed much of that. Now you can make
quick comparisons on most items, usually within a matter of minutes. What would
once have taken hours to accomplish now happens at the click of a mouse, a real
time and money saver. Don't forget online resources. For example, a site such as
Ebay could save a lot of money for a couple of reasons: First, you can make
comparisons among a number of sellers and second, you may be able to find
second-hand merchandise which can save you a bundle.
Borrowing
Money.
Unless you have an emergency, avoid those enticing advertisements to lend you
money at incredible rates. Banks and lending institutions make it much too easy
to borrow money and especially during the holidays, they flash all their great
advertisements drawing people in. Afterwards, you have borrowed money that you
could have done without and now you are locked into a repayment contract. If you
want a new car or some other thing, it is better to save. If you do need a new
car, avoid brand new cars, which lose massive amounts of appreciation the minute
you drive off the lot. Instead, look for something a year or two old where you
will still have a nice car but much more in line with an appropriate
cost.
Use Loyalty Cards. It is not just supermarkets that operate
loyalty schemes - many high street stores now do them as well, but don't confuse
them with store cards as they're not the same. Joining a loyalty scheme means
that every time you shop at the same store, you will be given a number of points
depending on how much you have spent. Once you have accumulated enough, you can
use your points to pay for your shopping in the same way that you would use
cash. Your points will be held on your own loyalty card that you give to the
cashier whenever you pay for your goods. You will also be able to check how many
points you have got in the store or online. Loyalty cards are handy if you buy a
lot of things from the same shop, and you would be surprised how quickly points
can add up.
